State Road 64/Manatee Avenue Improvement Project in Bradenton

The Department’s SR 64/Manatee Avenue Construction Project Team, a $5.9 million project, is soon to celebrate
the completion of another successfully executed improvement initiative through downtown Bradenton. Crews are
putting the finishing touches as items are being crossed off on punch lists and final walkthroughs are taking place
on this improvement project, which began in fall 2010. This effort was lead by the Sarasota Operations Center as
roadway enhancements were incorporated as part of Mobility Study along SR 64/Manatee Avenue from 12th Street
East to 15th Street West in the City of Bradenton. Improvements on this project consisted of milling and resurfac-
ing the old roadway, installing a new drainage system, updating signalization, adding new streetscape (landscaping/
irrigation), decorative lighting and water line installation.

Up front, the project team understood the important role that the City of Bradenton Public Works Department and
the various utility companies including CSX would have to embrace as water lines and an existing drainage system
were replaced and relocated along this major downtown roadway. This team knew from the start that ongoing part-
nering efforts would be essential and would take a major role in securing commitments on everyone’s part. This
included the anticipation of finding resolutions to unforeseen conflicts throughout the duration of the project including the unique design solution for the rehabilitation of a deteriorated box culvert that was discovered during

The SR 64/Manatee Avenue team achieved its mission of safely constructing this enhanced corridor while mini-
mizing impacts to the traveling public.
